Religion vs Science

In a previous post entitled: Religion Reloaded, dating back to February; I had already discussed the subject of Science vs Religion. However, as with all sensitive subjects a debate was inevitable: I had an interesting debate with a close friend of mine concerning this particular subject not more than 2 weeks ago.

Him being an atheist and a science man, while me being a spiritual but a man of science none the less. Majoring in Biotechnology and food sciences, I am a firm believer of what technology and science can do, but that has never put a stop to my faith.

I would like to share some of his opinions versus some of mine, I have to admit I enjoy a good debate as heated as it get when you’re actually discussing a subject with someone on the same intellectual level and not just a stubborn and blind believer.

We both learned a few new things, and it was a challenging process to find the right arguments to counter argue.
One argument from his part was:
Religion evolved? They are against contraceptives and because of them millions have HIV. They get their hands on everything they find. They have the biggest gold deposit in the world and yet help the hungry of the world by praying for them.
If you ask me, all churches and religious places in the world should be turned to hospitals and their gold used for the treatment and nourishment of the world... THAT would be how you help mankind

My reply:
Why isn't then medicine free? If science is not also looking for profit. HIV in Africa is because of lack of hygiene and education. People need to be taught, and they can use condoms. The only reason for church to ban condoms is understandable but not viable: it's like an abortion you are preventing a life from being created and if they approve condoms it’s an open invite to pre marital sex and promiscuity.

And so on, I could fill up a booklet, as the debate went on for more than hour. Nonetheless, What I am interested in was the moral:

  •           Both Science and Religion had their dark ages.
  •       Both are just tools that can be abused in the wrong hands.
  •      To be honest we all know politics and money control the world. Religion and science are just covers. Who funds most researches? Who takes profit from new discoveries?  And who uses religion as a cover up for wars?

My final point of view on this matter: we can go forever stating where science went wrong and where did religion. It’s not going to help either win the eternal battle. When in the end it has nothing to do with either of them, it all comes down to mankind its humanity and the consequences of each choice.

A question to ponder upon:
How come they collide together for evil like terrorism but never for good?
